Gray goo (also spelled grey goo) is a hypothetical existential threat proposed by unregulated technology in general and nanotechnology in particular. The term was coined by Eric Drexler in his 1986 book Engines of Creation (ISBN 0385199724), though he have later regretted using the term[1]. The theory is that self-replicating nanobots, if escaped, could consume all available resources, thus turning the world into gray goo.
