H+Pedia is a mouthful to pronounce and even type. Are any other names up for consideration? Pluspedia? Futurepedia?

I've installed MobileFrontend which detects if you're on a mobile sized device.

As a Humanity+ project obviously that needs to be branded, but it could for example live at wiki.humanityplus.org for example. Just some ideas Deku-shrub (talk) 15:59, 30 October 2015 (CDT)

Semantic Mediawiki
I propose we consider installing Semantic Mediawiki. Some background: Semantic Mediawiki is a free Mediawiki extension designed to enable the embedding of semantic data in wiki pages. So, for example, we could create pages for each cryopreserved person, tagged with whatever information we have about them. Then we could do cool things like auto-populate this page, create visualizations from their statistics, etc. And that's just one type of data. Any fact about the subject of a page (every page) can (and should!) be semantically tagged. I recognize that introducing new extensions incurs some degree of risk and imparts some additional maintenance nuisance (especially one as large and complex as SMW). Moreover, it isn't "just an extension," but a platform enabling a substantial library of other new extensions (each in varying degrees of maintenance). However, I argue that the upside to additional exposure of semantic data on H+Pedia far exceeds the downsides of risk and maintenance (an easy argument for me to make, since it's not my labor supporting the wiki). ::* With Semantic Mediawiki by itself, we could tag arbitrary data points on pages and then display them in a table view. For example, we could tag the birthdates of famous transhumanists on their respective pages and then show a table of upcoming transhumanist birthdays. Or, better yet, (in the same vein) we could tag dates of relevance to the community (Petrov Day, Winter Solstice, etc.) and put them in a dynamic table showing the upcoming "transhumanist holidays". We could tag books with obvious metadata (author, publication date, publisher, etc) and create a dynamic list of the latest book reviews. Ditto music, film, video games, etc...
 +
::* With External Data we could take any structured data that we might want to use (e.g. each person in this spreadsheet could be an entry) and have a page automatically generated and tagged with a point for every header in the spreadsheet. I can't think of a ton of uses here (since it requires existing data), but I can imagine other people might know of some interesting and useful extant data.
 +
::* With Maps we could tag any pages with corresponding locations (e.g. Transhumanist/Futurist meetups, rationality dojos, biohacker-friendly tattoo parlors, etc) and feature maps that aggregate all those tagged locations.
 +
::* With Semantic Result Formats we could tag pages that refer to events, and plot events relating to a common entity or theme on a timeline, calendar, or iCal feed.

Section developement

I wanted an intersections section but don't feel it's ready yet. Would feature:

Intersections • Comparison of futurist ideologies • ( Politics | Anarcho-Transhumanism | Technolibertarianism | Technoprogressivism ) • ReligionFeminismBusiness

Deku-shrub (talk) 13:43, 4 February 2018 (CST)

I'm thinking a dedicated subsection on Futurism would make sense also Deku-shrub (talk) 12:13, 8 April 2018 (CDT)

I've installed MobileFrontend which detects if you're on a mobile sized device.

Intro Paragraph

I think that the intro paragraph could be streamlined to read:

H+Pedia is a Humanity+ project to spread accurate, accessible, non-sensational information about transhumanism among the general public. H+Pedia is also an opportunity for transhumanists, and other radical life extensionists and futurists to work together, thereby strengthening the world transhumanist community.

We currently have 2,308 pages of all types, of which 936 are articles, and have 294 files uploaded. 18,102 edits have been made from 14 active users.

H+Pedia welcomes financial donations, to fund prize competitions that will encourage more people to become involved in the project. Natasha (talk) 16:24, 27 February 2018 (CST)

Good question! I've moved this question to the new mailing list for further discussion, https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/hpluspedia/ueLCv8jViJ8 --David W. Wood (talk) 04:34, 3 March 2018 (CST)

Manual of Style

As described in Wikipedia-favicon.png WP:MOS on Wikipedia, I haven't capitalized job titles (unless immediately followed by name), but noted examples in place on several articles. Going through the diffs, it looks like this can be attributed to TranshumanTees.

I modified “FM-2030 was a Futurist, Philosopher and Transhumanist. He was also an Athlete, Author, Consultant and Teacher” to read
“FM-2030 (October 15, 1930 – July 8, 2000) was a Belgian-born Iranian-American author, teacher, transhumanist philosopher, futurist, consultant and athlete.”

Deku-shrub, please let me know which of the two conventions should be kept in place going forward.

Cheers, Babelfish (talk) 05:31, 5 March 2018 (CST)

Nah, they shouldn't be capitalized, thanks for spotting. Also I have H+Pedia:Manual of style Deku-shrub (talk) 16:39, 7 March 2018 (CST)

Do it. The worst that can happen is that it only has a handful of people in it. Also you get to ask the question, are all effective altruists futurists? Deku-shrub (talk) 16:37, 7 March 2018 (CST)

Cloudflare

It turns out that we're not actually correctly behind Cloudflare. Sitegrounds integrates poorly via CNAMES, thus www.hpluspedia.org is on Cloudflare, but hpluspedia.org isn't. We'll need to move out the name servers to Cloudflare before this will work Deku-shrub (talk) 07:27, 9 March 2018 (CST)

Web browser icon

Hpluslogo.png

It would be good to use the h+ symbol as a web browser site icon to distinguish it from other tabs. Not sure where the config options are for it... — Cheers,– Babelfish (talk) 09:28, 13 March 2018 (CDT)

There used to be a small icon in place for exactly this purpose. That connection must have become unintentionally broken at some point. When I get a moment, I'll look into the history. --David W. Wood (talk) 11:32, 13 March 2018 (CDT)
Later... I've remembered how this is supposed to work. There needs to be a file favicon.ico on the root directory of the server. I used http://genfavicon.com/ to generate one. It's in place now, though in the process the transparent background has unexpectedly turned into opaque white. I think that must be a bug/feature of the genfavicon tool. Note also that I initially created a .ico that was 128x128, but that seemed not to be picked up by the mediawiki software. But when I regenerated it as 64x64, the mediawiki software seems happier. --David W. Wood (talk) 16:53, 13 March 2018 (CDT)
Isn't this working correctly? https://hpluspedia.org/favicon.ico Deku-shrub (talk) 16:54, 13 March 2018 (CDT)
That's the file I uploaded earlier this evening. (There was no such file on the server when I checked, beforehand.) It's included as expected in the Chrome tab header. But it has an opaque background, in contrast to most of the other favicons I see in my browser tab headers David W. Wood (talk) 17:47, 13 March 2018 (CDT)
Didn't realise you did it! A little work will be needed to make the background transparent still Deku-shrub (talk) 19:07, 13 March 2018 (CDT)
Thanks! Babelfish (talk) 12:10, 14 March 2018 (CDT)

Image links

What's the Wikicode equivalent to direct a mouse click on an image to a particular link, rather than to the corresponding image page? This might be useful for featured articles on the front page, where the image presents the largest target. Thanks! Cheers, — Babelfish (talk) 11:57, 22 March 2018 (CDT)

Autoconfirmed groups

We need a way of (automatically) promoting proven users into a group which can e.g. bypass external link captchas Deku-shrub (talk) 05:52, 23 April 2018 (CDT)

I'd appreciate it if this could include the ability to rename files and pages—to repair capitalization on this file, for example: File:Mauna_kea_2.jpg --> File:Mauna Kea2.jpg. Thanks, Babelfish (talk) 08:08, 24 April 2018 (CDT)

VisualEditor

Is there a straightforward way to implement VisualEditor and/or color-coded source code to the site? Thanks, Babelfish (talk) 09:01, 29 April 2018 (CDT)

+1. I'd love to know the answer. Lack of yisual editing may be a major factor preventing some people from becoming active editors/contributors to this site. David W. Wood (talk) 19:51, 30 April 2018 (CDT)
Given we've just upgraded, now is a very good time to try it out. However it's technically challenging, time to get a test instance up this time https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:VisualEditor Deku-shrub (talk)
VisualEditor is pretty complex (since the Parsoid dependency essentially adds a second complete server stack), but maybe we could add WikiEditor with less risk and effort? AABoyles (talk) 09:15, 16 October 2018 (CDT)

Gateway timeout

I've been unable to make a lot of edits because I keep getting a gateway timeout upon submission of the publish button. It's always happened, but usually could get around it by resubmitting a few times. More recently even that has failed to work. Are there any settings that can be changed on either end of the transmission to prevent the impediment to contribution?

Thanks, Babelfish (talk) 20:05, 9 June 2018 (CDT)

Any patterns? Times of days, size of submissions? Deku-shrub (talk) 05:10, 10 June 2018 (CDT)
Any time of day. Any edits to this article. This Talk:Main Page page works fine. Perhaps related to size. How to find workaround? I've tried the mobile interface limited to one section at a time to no avail. Thanks, Babelfish (talk) 10:58, 10 June 2018 (CDT)
Do you edit the whole page or just the relevant sub section when you experience the issue? It's the largest single page on the site, subsection editing shouldn't have problems. Deku-shrub (talk) 12:39, 10 June 2018 (CDT)
Surprisingly, it's the same when using the desktop or mobile view to edit just a single subsection (such as See also) at a time—which I thought would resolve it posthaste. Seems as good a time as any to trim it down. Babelfish (talk) 14:05, 10 June 2018 (CDT)

AABoyles (talk) 09:15, 16 October 2018 (CDT)

It's not loads of work to install, that said, can you give some more example of the sort of data visualisation projects we could run, also what kind of visualations are supported and could be applied in an interesting fashion? Deku-shrub (talk) 14:07, 16 October 2018 (CDT)
 • With Semantic Mediawiki by itself, we could tag arbitrary data points on pages and then display them in a table view.
 • With External Data we could take any structured data that we might want to use (e.g. each person in this spreadsheet could be an entry) and have a page automatically generated and tagged with a point for every header in the spreadsheet. I can't think of a ton of uses here (since it requires existing data), but I can imagine other people might know of some interesting and useful extant data.
 • With Maps we could tag any pages with corresponding locations (e.g. Transhumanist/Futurist meetups, rationality dojos, biohacker-friendly tattoo parlors, etc) and feature maps that aggregate all those tagged locations.
 • With Semantic Result Formats we could tag pages that refer to events, and plot events relating to a common entity or theme on a timeline, calendar, or iCal feed.
AABoyles (talk) 13:43, 17 October 2018 (CDT)
All very interesting. Is that your 'List of Cryonics Patients' doc, or who runs it?
I have an incomplete project to bring the Calendar into something either spreadsheet or calendar powered for instance on a dedicated site. I don't typically spend too much time on cryonics due to the frosty (pun intended) reception when I have reached out to the community for engagement with the project.
The history of transhumanism could become very granular if you included things like major Book and Film release dates
There is likely a prospective series of projects in mapping companies, people and meetups via this technology. I have so many projects!
I will have a think and might bring it up at TransVisions18 this weekend along with other H+Pedia ideas
Deku-shrub (talk) 13:53, 17 October 2018 (CDT)
