Uplifting is a proposed process of guided interventions to raise non-humans human-level sapience, or intelligence. Suggested methods include cultural interventions, genetic engineering, nanotechnological implants, etc.

The term was popularized by David Brin's Uplift series, while the concept can be traced back much earlier, notably including H. G. Wells' 1896 novel The Island of Doctor Moreau.

A cultural uplift experiment began in 2005 at the Great Ape Trust.[1]

In fiction, interactions between a 'patron' species and their uplifted 'clients' are often used as allegory to explore other power dynamics in society.
