H+Pedia:Proposed licensing
The base copyrights on H+Pedia need to be sorted out. Here are the following options considered:
Considered
No copyright
I don't believe in copyright, or copyleft as these presume permission is needed, something that operates against the very structure of the internet. However, practically speaking, I'm not aware of any boiler-plate statements that encompasses this so this would probably be confusing and unhelpful.
CC0
Aka public domain. https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/
This is the most permissive creative commons license, however from a selfish point of point, I would prefer to mandate attribution of content to encourage contributions. As a result, I've decided not to go this far.
CC BY-SA 3.0
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/
As above, except remixes may not be released under a different licenses.
Use of this license I consider less free than the below, in that it discourages commercial transformations.
CC BY 4.0
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
This permits both commercial and non-commercial use of content, so long as attribution is given. This is my preferred option.
Conclusions
I believe CC BY 4.0 allows for maximum commercial use, whilst ensuring attribution to the original contributors.
