One of the founders of the transhumanist movement Max More has long argued from the days of the Extropy Institute about the importance of self-ownership within the movement.
More argues self-ownership encompasses:
- Independent Thinking
- Individual Freedom
- Personal Responsibility
- Self-Direction
- Self-Esteem
- Respect for Others
More as well as many other transhumanists are critical of religious and bioconservative attitudes which reject self-ownership in different ways.[1]
Rejection
Rejection of self-ownership can be found in many religious and secular ideas.
- Original sin - the inheritability of sin from Judeo-Christian mythos
- Collectivism - such as the excesses of the Soviet Union
- Mind-body dualism or the Mind-body problem- the imperfections of the body compared to that of the soul
- There are some religious objections to tatoos
- Many people oppose a woman's ownership of her body when she carries a foetus
- Many people opposed biohacking[citation needed]
- Food taboos[citation needed]
