Plugins wanted
Wanted
This is a (to be expanded) list of plugins I would like:
- Link hover preview thing
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Graphical_Category_Browser - create visualisations of page interlinks, very useful of visualising the site in it's early stages
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CategoryTree - an alternative
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikiViz This might be superior but I can't yet get it to work :( Deku-shrub (talk) 13:41, 31 December 2015 (CST)
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikiEditor - Cite tool, allows for the pop-out rich reference creation tool I use all the time on Wikipedia, without which writing references is a pain
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:ParserFunctions This allows us of 'if' in templates and is needed to get the mediawiki/wikipedia columns and other templates working
- What's involved in enabling these plugins? David W. Wood (talk)
- It varies, but it usually involves downloading some code, placing it in the 'extensions' folder, then editing some config files to 'include' the extensions. Backups are important when doing this :) I could do this if you want but I'd need server access. Deku-shrub (talk) 06:58, 29 October 2015 (CDT)
- I second the motion to use ParserFunctions. It would be useful in creating templates. (I tried to make citation templates for books and Web pages like Wikipedia, but I failed miserably due to lack of an "if" function.) --Haptic-feedback (talk) 21:26, 23 January 2016 (CST)
- ProveIt - May need some modification to work with this wiki --Topperfalkon (talk) 18:56, 24 January 2016 (CST)
- Sidebar or header to follow H+Pedia on Twitter. Needs a actual widget to use on the page and elsewhere Deku-shrub (talk) 05:45, 7 May 2016 (CDT)
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Echo https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Thanks Deku-shrub (talk) 14:41, 18 October 2016 (CDT)
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Usage_Statistics I want this Deku-shrub (talk) 07:36, 25 October 2016 (CDT)
- Talk page below article thing https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/1102:_Fastest-Growing
Installed
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RecentPages - I have installed this and you can see it in use on the front page :) Deku-shrub (talk) 18:21, 10 December 2015 (CST)
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Short_URL/Apache - mmm, sexier urls now Deku-shrub (talk) 17:03, 21 December 2015 (CST)
- https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:EmbedVideo - Allows embedding of various video types
Templates wanted
- Citations/references https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite
- This is now done Deku-shrub (talk) 08:14, 31 December 2015 (CST)
- Custom 'this is a series about' templates, more info to follow to aid site navigation
- Pretty templates for the home page :)
- What's involved in enabling these templates? David W. Wood (talk)
- Sometimes there might be dependent plugins, but a lot of the time it's a case of building the Template:sometemplate page and then going about including {{sometemplate}} where appropriate Deku-shrub (talk) 10:10, 29 October 2015 (CDT)
- A decent infobox template, like how Wikipedia currently does it I guess --Topperfalkon (talk) 17:02, 11 July 2017 (CDT)
Site stuff
- I prefer https on my sites! :(
- Agreed - I'll look into why this doesn't work David W. Wood (talk)
- Ah, the answer might be here (on the siteground knowledgebase) David W. Wood (talk)
- Intermediate level server configuration and a $5 a year SSL certificate will be required Deku-shrub (talk) 10:12, 29 October 2015 (CDT)
- Ah, the answer might be here (on the siteground knowledgebase) David W. Wood (talk)
- I think as noted there is some issue with sign-up / validation
- A new MediaWiki release has become available (v1.25.3); perhaps that will fix this problem David W. Wood (talk)
- URL rewritten urls http://techwelkin.com/mediawiki-urls-short-clean-and-beautiful (there are a few guides for this) Deku-shrub (talk) 11:43, 31 October 2015 (CDT)
- I would like the site to have a favicon! Deku-shrub (talk) 09:50, 1 November 2015 (CST)
- There's now a placeholder favicon - it's based on Media:FavIconSource2.png, converted using genfavicon --David W. Wood (talk) 11:29, 22 November 2015 (CST)
- Today a favicon, tomorrow the world! Deku-shrub (talk) 18:22, 22 November 2015 (CST)
- Dear readers, we now are running Google Analytics so we can spy on you. Sorry about this :( Deku-shrub (talk) 18:48, 1 December 2015 (CST)
- The site occasionally seems to time out. I need to add Pingdom to see how serious this issue is Deku-shrub (talk) 07:29, 9 December 2015 (CST)
- I've noticed the wiki isn't responsive/mobile friendly. This could do some harm with Google who now likes all sites to be so. Not sure how you go about fixing that, but will look into it. EDIT: Here's the best link I found; https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Mobiles,_tablets_and_responsive_design --TranshumanTees (talk) 14:04, 28 November 2016 (CST)
- A friend of mine who wanted to view the site recently mentioned he was having trouble viewing it on mobile because of this. --TranshumanTees (talk) 07:11, 7 July 2017 (CDT)
Wiki name
H+Pedia is a mouthful to pronounce and even type. Are any other names up for consideration? Pluspedia? Futurepedia?
As a Humanity+ project obviously that needs to be branded, but it could for example live at wiki.humanityplus.org for example. Just some ideas Deku-shrub (talk) 15:59, 30 October 2015 (CDT)
I've got it! The Humanity Plus Futuresphere. Like Blogosphere, Manosphere etc. :D Deku-shrub (talk) 17:23, 15 November 2015 (CST)
Site copyrights
I've been thinking we should explicitly copyright the wiki content one way of the other. I am torn between CC0, the one that seeks to actively place content into the public domain, and the more common cc by license that requires attribution. Deku-shrub (talk) 06:03, 13 December 2015 (CST)
Skin options
I've come across some nice non-standard mediawiki skins at Cyborg Anthropology and Aging Chart. I wonder if we should switch to them? Deku-shrub (talk) 12:51, 31 December 2015 (CST)
- Really like the look of AgingChart.org. Looks clean and clear. The CA one looks worse than HPlusPedia IMO. --TranshumanTees (talk) 11:29, 25 October 2016 (CDT)
Home page design
I am not a strong designer type, I have too much of a 'detail view' of the site right now, and I can't work out what a decent home page would look like, any ideas? Deku-shrub (talk) 08:38, 2 January 2016 (CST)
- Like the new look! --TranshumanTees (talk) 12:59, 27 November 2016 (CST)
- So as you'll see, the yellow is gone. As such the pallet is now blue and grey. I want something more though :/ Deku-shrub (talk) 14:58, 27 November 2016 (CST)
- I think it looks a little "cold" now, but it looks a lot cleaner (Better IMO). I'm not sure what more you can do with a wiki design wise. --TranshumanTees (talk) 14:01, 28 November 2016 (CST)

Misspelling
- H+Pedia is also an opportunity for transhumanist, radical life extensionist and futurist enthusiasts to work together, thereby strengthening the transhumanist community.

Pirated and unattributed content
So I encountered my first case of pirate/unattributed content on this Youtube channel Singularity Videos.
I would argue at least with Changesurfer Radio he's doing a public service by disseminating content on the reliable host that is Youtube, rather than its native hard to browse mp3 format.
However this now forces H+Pedia to think about positions on such content. My personal view is that it's okay to create a channel like that if:
- The content doesn't already exist on Youtube
- Credit to the original sources are fully made
- Permission is asked for and not actively declined
This puts me in the odd position of acting as transhumanist content police, because now I might have to inform James Hughes about this. He in turn may or may not mind.
Thoughts? Deku-shrub (talk) 11:53, 1 January 2016 (CST)
